Sanyo Develops Single Read/Write Chip for HD DVD

Sanyo announced on August 11 that it has developed a read/write chip for CD, DVD and HD (High Definition) DVD. According to the company, the chip will allow for a space savings of 60% in HD DVD players and recorders, in comparison with the two chips currently used, and reduce costs by approximately 1,000 Yen per appliance. Sanyo stated that mass production of the new chip will start in the spring of 2006 at the earliest.
